Imo PDP Slams Uzodinma on Democracy Day, Cites Lack of Integrity and Transparency in Governance
Owerri, June, 2025 – As Nigeria commemorates its 26th Democracy Day, the Imo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has issued a scathing critique of Governor Hope Uzodinma’s administration, accusing it of lacking integrity, transparency, and adherence to democratic principles.
In a press statement released to mark the occasion, the PDP’s Publicity Secretary, Lancelot Obiaku, urged Uzodinma to restore public confidence in democratic governance with less than three years remaining in his tenure. The party lamented that the state’s citizens have little cause for celebration due to widespread issues, including a lack of transparency, accountability, and respect for the rule of law, coupled with what it described as “monumental corruption.”
The PDP accused Uzodinma of undermining the judiciary and legislature, effectively running an executive-driven government that disregards the separation of powers. The statement highlighted alleged human rights abuses, extrajudicial killings, administrative recklessness, and abuse of power as hallmarks of the current regime. “Citizens are weary of the prevailing undemocratic practices that have stifled development and triggered regression in key sectors of Imo’s economy,” Obiaku stated.
A notable point of contention raised by the PDP is the prolonged absence of a Chief Judge in Imo State, a situation unprecedented in the state’s history. The position has remained vacant since November 16, 2024, with the party alleging that Uzodinma’s failure to request a recommendation from the National Judicial Council for the appointment of the most senior judicial officer violates Section 271(4) of the Nigerian Constitution. “How can people celebrate democracy in a state without a Chief Judge for nearly a year due to the Governor’s greed and undemocratic nature?” the statement queried.
The PDP called on Uzodinma to embrace democratic tenets, respect the rule of law, and address the state’s governance challenges to foster development and restore public trust. The party emphasized that, despite the administration’s shortcomings, there is still time to make amends and deliver accountable leadership to Imo citizens.
As Democracy Day celebrations continue nationwide, the PDP’s statement has sparked discussions about the state of governance in Imo, with many residents expressing concerns over the issues raised. The Uzodinma administration has yet to respond to the allegations at the time of this report.
